Thousand Son army recap/ no instruction

The above pictures show the army that I had to repaint for the upcoming basement bash contest game. The list is as follows:

45 rubric marines

5 sorcerers

Ahriman

2 rhinos

I repainted all these over the course of about three weeks. This type of assembly line painting is just basic colors and its good because it leaves room improving the army if you want to take it to the next level.

Thousand Sons rhino #2

I didnt give much instructions as to how I got the finished product on the last rhino, so I will trya nd do a better job on this one. I sprayed it the dark navy blue and did a heavy drybrush with a large brush using enchanted blue from the GW paint line. The first drybrush is to change the color of the model. Next I did a much lighter dry brush, again with the large size brush, using lightning blue from the GW line. This second dry brush is much more to actually highlight the model than the first drybrush.

The top hatch doors are very simple. I got the first line using a right triangle and flushing the top of the hatch and the triangle. To get the remaining parallel lines, I used a drafting ruler and made pencil marks at regular intervals starting from the first line. Do that on both the horizontal and vertical edges and then draw your lines from there. Layer up the stripes starting with a dark grey and then at least a fortress grey followed by a good quality white,(vallejo.) Golden yellow then end it with bad moon yellow and white highlights. I havent gotten to the yellow yet. We will see, these are loner rhinos for the big game so we will have to wait and see with priorities and all.
I did everything but spray the model, the metallic, and take the pictures one hour before I left for work. Completion time including spray 1.5 hours

Thousand Sons rhino #1

I have painted almost 3000 points of Thousand Sons for this big game. I got a lot of them in a cheap buy from a friend, but had to repaint most of them. I did this rhino in the pictures the same way that I did the Alpha legion rhino. Dry brush, dry brush, dry brush! I did do some basic free hand on this one.

Alpha Legion Rhino

This is a rhino that I did for much the same reason as the night lords. I have to have them represented and I found someone with a couple of squads that let me paint a rhino that was unpainted. As you can see in the pics, I just base coated the model with a cheap dark blue spray from walmart and then dry brushed it with green highlights. I am just trying to get the models indentified with the legion and it passed the random, What legion is this?, test! I would like to paint the scales and a hydra head on it but I just dont have the time. Completion time = 2 hrs

night lords

In the big game, I absolutely envision all 18 founding legions. That unfortunately means that the less popular legions would have to be painted just to get them represented. I repainted the six raptors that I had painted for my Black Legion in the night lords color scheme. I spent a total of maybe 4-5 hours on all 11 figs. I had to borrow some unpainted raptors and make a winged lord in order to swell the numbers/ points for the game. These are just basic paint jobs that can be added to later. When doing a army, you can always get a base coat done that allows you to come back and improve upon the fig later. I do this so that I can get the army on the table and so I don't get burnt out on the army and never want to come back to it.

Rhino/ big game update

It looks like things are coming together now that we have everyone reporting in with point totals that are painted.

Here are a few pictures of one of the Rhinos that I am doing in order to get my Black Legion going. I am doing the hull designs because of a peer of mine in our gaming group. He does excellent free hand work and is really only a beginner @ painting 40k armies. Check out his blog. So far from what I have read, and seen, he offers great advice on painting Blood Angels. http://warhammer40kbloodangels.blogspot.com/

Back to the Rhino. To do the designs I use a drafting ruler, a 90 degree triangle, and a circle template that I use for drafting. The design of the chaos star is fairly simple as long as you keep things centered. Create, in pencil, a center point that can be referenced throughout the drafting of the whole design. I often, but not always start on paper and then template it onto the model. That means cutting it out on paper and tracing it onto the model. I start with the circle and then usually move to one of the right angled arrows. If your doing the whole chaos star that wont matter as long as you have a right angle after the first one. you get the 45 degree arrows by using the 90 degree triangle and inverting it. Place the point on the center point in the circle and you have two 45 dgree angels. You will have to eyeball it so be careful.
One IMPORTANT thing to make it easier on you, try and leave off as many vehicle options as possible. If you want even shave off some of the misc. rivets that come onthe vehicles. put on the vehicle options after all freehand work is finished but before highlighting or final detail stages
Good luck!

The Black Legion

I have been speed painting the new Black Legion army that I am doing. My gaming group has decided we will do an Apocalypse game with all 18 founding chapters in a bitter heresy battle. The final total will be 20000 points and all models will be painted to represent modern age color schemes. It was my idea so a lot of the extra work will fall on me. We are doing this to enter the Basement Bash contest entered in the latest White Dwarf. We will be playing on a 6'X18' board that we made for the apoc. games. Half of the board will be filled to the brim with well made and painted city fight terrain. If someone else wins the contest then they will deserve it because we will have painted back drops and the cooolest battle possible. Deployment will most likely be done to recreate battles that happened in the Horus Heresy. On one end we will have the emperors children, world eaters, death guard, sons of Horus(black legion,) fighting against the Iron Hands, Salamanders, Raven guard fading into Blood Angels, white scars, and Imperial fists going against who ever assaulted the Emperors palace. This will be a site to behold for any true 40k fan. Anyway here are a couple of pictures of what I have done already.
